Hotel Towels: GSM, Cotton Type and How Long They Last
Heavier is not always better. What GSM to specify for bath, hand and face towels, ring-spun versus open-end cotton, poly-cotton blends, and why a 700 GSM towel costs roughly 40% more to launder than a 500 GSM one.

For most independent hotels, a bath towel of 500 to 600 GSM in ring-spun cotton is the practical specification. Luxury properties go to 600 to 700 GSM. Heavier towels feel richer but dry slowly and cost more to launder, because a 700 GSM bath towel weighs about 40% more than a 500 GSM one of the same size.
Towels are the highest-turnover linen in the building, and the item guests judge by touch in the first minute. They are also easy to over-specify. This guide covers the numbers that matter and the ones that only look good on a brochure.
What GSM should a hotel bath towel be?
GSM means grams per square metre, the weight of the fabric. Common working ranges, which vary between suppliers:
- Budget and limited-service: about 400 to 500 GSM
- Mid-range and upscale: about 500 to 600 GSM
- Luxury: about 600 to 700 GSM, sometimes more
You can turn GSM into an actual weight. A standard bath towel of 70 x 140 cm covers 0.98 square metres, so at 500 GSM it weighs about 490 g, at 600 GSM about 590 g and at 700 GSM about 690 g. Hand towels and face cloths are usually specified lighter than bath towels, since they are smaller and dry faster.
Why heavier towels cost more to run
Laundries, in-house or outsourced, cost by weight and by drying time. The 700 GSM bath towel at about 690 g weighs 40% more than a 500 GSM towel at about 490 g. A hotel with 60 rooms and five bath towels per room in circulation holds 300 bath towels, and the heavier specification adds almost 59 kg to every full rotation. It also dries slower and uses more energy in the tumble dryer.
If your laundry is outsourced and charged per kilogram, that extra weight appears directly on the invoice. If it is in-house, it appears in gas, electricity and machine time. Neither shows on the unit price, so include it when you compare quotes. Our linen par level formula explains why towels usually carry a higher par than sheets, which magnifies the effect.
Cotton type: ring-spun, combed and open-end
- Ring-spun cotton twists the fibres into a stronger, smoother yarn. It costs more and feels softer, and holds up better through repeated washing.
- Combed cotton removes short fibres before spinning, giving a finer, stronger yarn.
- Open-end (rotor) spun cotton is cheaper and slightly rougher. It suits budget stock and high-loss items.
- Poly-cotton blends dry faster and last longer under harsh laundry, but feel less absorbent and less luxurious. A blend can be sensible for pool and gym towels.
Provenance terms such as Egyptian or Turkish cotton tell you about origin and fibre length, not about the weave or finish of a given towel. Ask for a fibre composition and a test report, not a marketing name.
What to ask before ordering
- Weight and dimensions after the first five washes, since new towels shrink
- Colour fastness, particularly on any coloured border, under hot commercial washing
- Absorbency and pilling performance after repeated washing
- Whether the border is woven in or sewn on
- Stock or custom status. Stock towels typically take 4 to 8 weeks, and custom weave or embroidery 10 to 14, as set out in our lead-time guide
Towels sit inside the three to five year soft-goods band in our replacement cycle guide, but high-loss items such as pool towels turn over faster. Browse towels and bath linen with a target GSM in mind before you request samples.
Towels are within the listed scope of the incoming EU textile producer responsibility rules, see EU textile EPR for hotel linen and curtains.
